Term 3: What Makes A Good Pet?

Our enquiry this term is 'What Makes a Good Pet?'. We will be learning what kinds of animals make a suitable pet and why. We will be thinking about how best to care for a pet and how to keep pets happy, healthy and safe. We will be welcoming the children's pets into class and we will also be visited by a local vet.

We will be exploring a variety of texts to enhance our learning including 'What Pet to Get?', 'Dear Zoo', 'The Great Pet Sale', 'Thank You For Looking After Our Pets' and 'I'm Thinking of a Pet.' We will be continuing to develop our listening skills using Phase 1 phonics. We will be focusing on rhythm, rhyme and alliteration.

We will begin to deepen our understanding of early mathematical skills by developing fast recognition of objects, begin to match numeral with quantity and begin to compare quantities using language 'more than' and 'fewer than'. We will also look at numbers to five in greater depth looking closely at the composition of each number.

Key Dates:

First Day of the Term: Tuesday 6th January 2026

Last Day of the Term: Friday 13th February 2026

Stay and Play dates:

Tuesday 13th January 2:30pm – 3:10pm

Thursday 29th January 2:30pm – 3:10pm

There will be a Celebration Event Stay and Play in the final week. The provisional dates for these are:

Green group (start of the week) – Wednesday 11th February at 10:45am

Blue, Purple, Red Groups – Thursday 12th February at 2:15pm

These dates and times will be confirmed at the start of the new term.

Term 2: What Makes Winter Wonderful?

Our enquiry this term is ‘What Makes Winter Wonderful?'. We will be learning about the season changing from Autumn to Winter through various story books, including 'The Gruffalo', 'Bear Snores On' and 'Snowbear'. We will learn all about Hibernation and discover which animals sleep throughout the Winter. We will be learning about snowy animals and where they live. We will be beginning our Phonics lessons with a focus on Phase 1. We will begin to develop the bedrock for children's early reading by developing our listening skills and beginning to discriminate between different sounds. We will be continuing to develop our early mathematical skills by reciting numbers beyond 5 and counting small sets of objects from Autumn leaves to snowflakes, understand position through a game of hide and seek with the Gruffalo, make comparisons between animals relating to size and we will extend and create patterns using winter clothing. We will also be getting into the Christmas spirit and be practising our singing for our Christmas Production.

Key dates:

First day of term: Monday 3rd November

Parent Consultations with Key workers – during the week commencing 8th December. Please note that the consultations will take place during the Nursery day time, and we will have sign upsheets to make your appointment on the door, a couple of weeks before.

Nursery Christmas song performances: Tuesday 16th December, Thursday 18th December.

Last day of term Friday 19th December.
